MAJOR TOOL & MACHINE CASE STUDY  

PROJECT CHALLENGE 

A few challenges we overcame during the project included the overall size of the rooms in relatively limited space, incorporating bridges and cranes, and an aggressive construction schedule.  The rooms had to meet specifications for the ISO class, temperature, and humidity tolerances, or the precision manufacturing and measuring could be negatively affected.  As industry leaders in controlled environments construction, MTM had full confidence in the Western Environmental team to execute the project as specified.

DESIGN PARAMETERS

Cleanroom Design: 

• 125’ x 55’ x 24’ inside height and 28’ exterior height 

• ISO 7 & ISO 6 areas 

• 22°C set point with a room tolerance of +/- 2°C & 30% - 60% RH 

• Also included was an ISO 7 gowning room and two smaller cleanrooms

CMM Lab Design: 

• 117’ x 55’ x 30’ inside height and 35’ exterior height 

• ISO 7 classification by particulate 

• 20°C set point and a room tolerance of +/- 0.5°C per meter, 1.0°C per hour and 2.0°C per day 

• 40-70% RH

Washing Bay Design: 

• 35’ x 50’ x 20’  

• Ambient air flow only with relief grilles  

• The specialty design in this room was the custom pneumatic operated sliding doors we designed and included for part and crane access.  

Project Materials Design 

• Structural steel with sealed and insulated roof panel system, engineered to maintain a live load of 20 P. S. F. 

• Wall and roof panels are insulated, and flame/smoke tested to ASTM E84 Standards with a FM-4880 class 1 fire rating. (FM approved) 

• The mechanical equipment included four air handlers, reheats, R/O humidifiers, blowers, filtration, and all necessary duct work, piping, etc.  

• Our Western Environmental custom-built mechanical control systems were designed specifically for this build and in real time allowed MTM to see temperatures, humidity, room pressures, fan status, alarms, etc. The control system is also capable of being monitored remotely and data logging.  

• The project also included cleanroom rapid roll up doors, cranes, perforated ceiling panels as well as gasketed cleanroom ceiling grid, insulated double pane clear glass windows sealed airtight, (2) tunnels to connect CMM room and cleanroom, custom L shaped bi-parting door for crane access to the wash bay, airtight man doors, all electrical, fire suppression, and testing & certification.
